Museum Collection Case Study

The Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising Colorado State University

In the spring of ’09 the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising relocated to its current location at the University Center for the Arts on the campus of Colorado State University. The purpose of the Museum is to obtain, document, preserve, and exhibit artifacts emphasizing the material culture and cultural transfer of the near environment of the ordinary person. Key to this purpose is the preservation of over 12,000 objects of domestic and global artifacts.

Ms. Linda Carlson, Curator, needed a professional museum storage company to provide storage to preserve and access this valuable collection. Certified Business Services, Inc. along with CBS’s key manufacturing partners; Aurora Storage Products and Viking Metal Cabinet, Co. were able to exceed her goals of protection and access in a limited amount of space.

As Ms. Carlson herself stated, “the team that worked to complete the installation of the Aurora Mobile System and the Viking Cabinets was professional and efficient. The system works beautifully and the Viking Cabinets, that allow us to configure the interiors based on the contents, are exactly what we wanted for the 12,000 objects in our museum. Our objects are now safer, more secure, and at the same time more accessible because of this professional system.”

Since the initial installation, CBS has added solutions for oversized objects, rolled textiles, and has also designed custom rolling exhibit cabinets. These cabinets have plexi-glass covered drawers and can be stacked and stored later when exhibit ends.
